PE and Sport Premium

Understanding the PE and Sport Premium

What Is It?
The PE and Sport Premium is ring-fenced government funding provided annually to most state primary schools in England. Its goal is to support sustainable enhancements to physical education, sport, and daily physical activity—so all pupils build lifelong healthy habits.

How Much Do You Get?
- Base amount: £16,000 per school with 17+ pupils in Years 1–6
- Additional funding: £10 per pupil over that threshold.
- Smaller schools (16 pupils or fewer) receive a flat rate of £1,000 per pupil.

Payment Schedule (2024–25 example)
- Maintained schools get funding via local authorities (split into 7/12 and 5/12 instalments).
- Academies/free schools are paid directly, also in two instalments.

For the 2025–26 year, funding of £320 million is expected, again split 50/50 between autumn and spring instalments.

What You Can Spend It On?
The Premium must be used to create additional, sustainable improvements in PE and sport—not to fund statutory curriculum delivery. Acceptable uses include:

1. Staff CPD & specialist coaching – e.g., up-skilling teachers or employing PE specialists to shadow teachers.
2. New equipment & resources – to broaden PE and play options.
3. Wider curriculum & extracurriculars – introducing new sports, active travel, clubs, competitive events.
4. Swimming/water safety top-ups – specifically for pupils who haven’t met national curriculum standards.
5. Targeted activity strategies – engaging the least active, SEND pupils, girls, disadvantaged groups.

Accountability & Reporting
- Annual digital return: Schools must complete a DfE digital form detailing expenditure by 31 July (2025 example).
- Website report: Publish a breakdown of spend, impact on pupil participation, how improvements will be maintained—and Year 6 swimming attainment.
- Governance oversight: SLT and governors (or trustees) must monitor and ensure funds are used appropriately.
- Compliance: If misused or unspent, funding may be clawed back by the Secretary of State.

Five Key Objectives
Schools should focus spending on these priorities:

1. Staff confidence & capacity in PE delivery
2. Pupil engagement in regular physical activity
3. Raising PE’s profile across the whole school
4. Broader sport offerings to all pupils
5. Increased competitive opportunities

In Summary
The PE and Sport Premium is a significant investment to ensure every primary pupil has access to high-quality, lasting physical education and activity. It must be used smartly, reported meticulously, and leveraged to help build healthy habits for life.
